Premier:

The Friends of the Tay Watershed Association has serious concerns with the current Ontario Mining Act. Our association believes that the Act is out-dated and deficient from an environmental perspective, particularly for populated and environmentally sensitive watersheds. We ask that your Government undertake an immediate public review of the Act, with the objective of updating it to refelct the circumstances and priorities of the twenty-first century.

Our association also wishes to register concern regarding the risks associated with uranium exploration, mining and processing in Ontario. According to available information in other North American communities, where such activities have taken place, there have been significant associated health and environmental problems. We note that some other provinces have decided that the risks for their residents of such activities were too high and, following the precautionary principle, have banned such activities in their jurisdictions. Therefore, our association recommends that the Ontario government enact a moratorium on uranium exploration, mining and processing and carry out a review of the impact of these activities on health and the environment, parallel to the review of the Ontario Mining Act.

The Friends of the Tay Watershed Association is a non-profit organisation, established in 2002, to provide stewardship for the watershed of the Tay River, in eastern Ontario. Extending over 95 kilometres in length, with 46 lake and stream sub-watersheds, the pristine watershed supports a major tourism and cottage industry in the region. It is also a primary source of water for the Rideau Canal system and River, which touches many communities in the region enroute to its terminus in Ottawa. In carrying out this mandate, the association cooperates with and supports the activities of approximately 23 lake, resident and environment associations, local governments and government agencies, corporations and business groups.

We look forward to receiving your confirmation of this request.

Yours truly,

David Taylor,

President,
On behalf of the Board of Directors
