The Community Coalition Against
Mining Uranium is pleased to announce that the Citizens' Inquiry
into the Impacts of the Uranium Cycle will be in Kingston on April
8th at Queen Street United Church. Observers are encouraged to
attend, panelists are in place and the public hearing registrations
are filled to capacity.
A panel will hear presentations
from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Panel members
for the Inquiry will come from Fraser McVie, retired Director
General, Security, Correctional Services Canada; Cameron Smith,
Toronto Star columnist and former [Managing Editor of the Globe
and Mail] and Janet Gutowski, Mayor of Central Frontenac, Marion
Dewer, former Mayor of Ottawa, Lorraine Rekmans, from Serpent
River First Nation and Professor Robert Paehlke, Trent University.
Public hearings will also take place in Peterborough, Ottawa and
Toronto. Premier McGuinty has been invited to attend, as have
the Hon. John Gerretsen, Minister of the Environment; the Honourable
Gerry Phillips, Minister of Energy; Honourable Rick Gravelle,
Ministry to of Northern Development and Mines; Honourable Michael
Bryant, Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs and the Honourable George
Smitherman, Minister of Health and Safety.
"We recently received
a letter from Premier McGuinty stating, "Our government knows
that any process that brings people together to talk about their
concerns and attempts to find solutions is valuable," stated
CCAMU member, Wolfe Erlichman, spokesperson for CCAMU.
He added, "These hearings
are an opportunity for everyone to participate and to have their
say on any aspect of the uranium cycle".
