For Immediate release,
March 11, 2008
The much anticipated Citizens'
Inquiry into the Impacts of the Uranium Cycle is scheduled to
begin in Sharbot Lake on April 1st, traveling to Kingston for
April 8th, Peterborough for April 15th, and end in Ottawa on Earth
Day.
The sponsoring organization,
The Citizens Coalition Against Mining Uranium, (CCAMU) invites
interested people to register to have their say on any aspect
of the uranium/nuclear equation, and/or to send their written
and electronic submissions to: www.uraniumcitizensinquiry.com
"We have been asking
the government to hold an inquiry into uranium mining and they
have failed to respond," said Wolfe Erlichman of CCAMU. "Thirteen
councils from Kingston through to Ottawa have passed resolutions
supporting a moratorium on uranium exploration and mining and
a public inquiry into the mining act; thousands of people have
written letters and dozens of organizations have made appeals;
Queen's Instructor, Bob Lovelace has been incarcerated and he
and Trent University Professor, Paula Sherman, as well as the
Ardoch First Nation have been fined. They and others, also charged
with contempt, will be heard and sentenced in Kingston court during
the week of March 18th. In the absence of action by the government,
we are going to hold a Citizen's Inquiry and invite the Premier
to attend. We will even go to his home town to accommodate him."
The intention of the Inquiry
is to cover all aspects of the uranium cycle: from claim staking,
exploration, mining, processing, transportation, and end uses
(power, weapons, medical), to waste disposal. The Inquiry welcomes
factual material from experts, stakeholders and those interested
in uranium, as well as the commentary of citizens from all walks
of life. It is an opportunity to gather a comprehensive range
of opinion and knowledge about the impacts of the uranium cycle
on community, economic, health, social justice issues, and the
environment. Presentations and submissions should include recommendations
and a suggested path forward.
The Inquiry will be traveling throughout Eastern Ontario:

St. Andrew Anglican Church
1028 Elizabeth Street
Kingston beginning April 8th,
Queen St. United Church
