LETTER WRITING

THE GOVERNMENT:

This is a cross ministry issue but if you were only going to write one letter, address it to our Premier and then cc it to the other Ministries and your local media (see below for addresses). We have reason to believe that we have the attention of the Premier so it is even more important to let him know what you think.

Handwritten letters are taken more seriously than email but please do send an email if that is all you have time for. Your letter does not need to be long to be effective but it is best if you use your own words rather than a set form letter. MAKE SURE YOU ASK FOR A RESPONSE! If you don’t they won’t reply.

When writing a letter to the government you can include some or all of the following points. You could also write one letter per week asking about one of the following points.

* Explain that the proposed exploration site is at the headwaters of the Mississippi River watershed in Eastern Ontario, which provides drinking water to hundreds of thousands of people and is used for recreation and tourism.

* Explain that the site is in Algonquin territory, which was never surrendered or sold to the Crown.

* Explain that time has shown that there has never been a “safe” uranium mine in the history of the industry.

* Ask what protections are in place when the government grants permits for exploration of uranium in environmentally sensitive and populated area.

* Call for a public inquiry into the impacts of the exploration and mining of uranium.

* Call for an environmental impact assessment before exploration begins.

* Call for a permanent moratorium of uranium mining in Ontario.

Also write to your MP and MPP and tell them about your concerns. Ask them where they stand on the issue of uranium mining. You do not need to be local to this particular protest, to speak about your opposition to uranium mining in Ontario. In fact this is a Global issue.
