COMMUNITY COALITION AGAINST
MINING URANIUM

The Community Coalition Against Mining Uranium (CCAMU)
is a group of concerned citizens from the greater Ottawa Valley
and Kingston area, who have come together to prevent a
uranium mine in Frontenac and Lanark region.

A uranium exploration company has staked and claimed 30,000
acres of land at the headwaters of the Mississippi water system,
which feeds the Ottawa River. Scientific experts and history
tells us that if a uranium mine were developed in this region
it would be a serious environmental and public health concern.

OUR COMMUNITY

Our area is renowned for cultural events, tourism, and cottage
life. According to their website, Frontenac County is committed
to promoting responsible and sustainable economic development.
The four key elements that should be taken into consideration
before the development of any project are the social, cultural,
environmental and economic impacts to our region.

The Rideau Canal, which is a part of the Mississippi watershed,
was internationally recognized this year with a UNESCO
world heritage designation.

OUR PROTEST

Our non-native coalition made Canadian history by joining a
peaceful protest that had been set up by the Shabot Obaadjiwan
First Nation and the Ardoch Algonquin First Nation on
June 28th, 2007.

Since then CCAMU has taken part in hundreds of
actions to bring the government's and the public's attention
to our concerns about uranium mining in Ontario, in Canada and
the World. Our popular on-line publication, the Uranium News,
gives updates on local, national and international
uranium and nuclear information.

OUR SUPPORTERS

We have the support of 23 municipalities in our region including the
Cities of Ottawa, Kingston, Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes,
the towns of Perth and Carleton Place
and the municipalities of North, Central and South Frontenac,
Beckwith, Lanark Highlands, Tay Valley, Lanark County,
Highland East (Bancroft area), Mississippi Mills,
Haliburton, Dysart, Algonquin Highlands,
Minden and Drummond/North Elmsley
in calling for
a moratorium on uranium mining in Eastern Ontario.

Our MPP Randy Hillier and MP Scott Reid have stated
their opposition to existing mining policies in Ontario,
which separates surface rights from mineral rights.
Under the current law, companies are legally allowed
to begin mining development on the private property
without the consent of the landowner.

We also have the support of such organizations as
Amnesty International, Council of Canadians, Greenpeace Canada,
Mining Watch Canada, International Land Coalition,
Green Party of Canada and Ontario, United Church of Canada,
Physicians for Global Survival, Ontario College of Family Physicians,
Lanark Health and Community Services, David Suzuki Foundation
Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment
and many local organizations in the region.
